Hello, Project Planet Fellows! I've been thinking of becoming a vegan/vegetarian lately, but sometimes I find healthy foods (including vegan foods) are far more expensive than cooked foods that contain meat. What do you guys think? All kinds of opinions are welcome here!😊
P.S : Thanks for the opinions!
Hi @Agnes Rosiana , Thanks for asking this question! I completely get where you're coming from because I felt the same way you did when I was starting out a more plant-based diet! After a while, there are a few things I noticed. Firstly, I noticed that most of the time in restaurants, vegetarian/vegan food is the same if not slightly cheaper than meat-inclusive food. I think I've been wired to think that they are "more expensive" because it doesn't look like eating veggies is "worth that much". But I wasn't counting the health benefits! The second thing is that organic foods do tend to be more expensive. This is because of the production & operational costs of locally farmed vegetables are higher than when it is mass-produced and non-organic. Often vegan/vegetarian food is closely related to organic food as well, which is why sometimes it costs more. The last thing I noticed, is the high cost of fake meat! Boy oh boy are they expensive hahaha. Understandably so, as they are still considered a "rare" and "new" option. I do believe that veganism/vegetarianism will have a MUCH higher demand in the future, so these prices are bound to go down someday. Not to mention some governments subsidize healthy food options, so that is something we can encourage as the green movement grows in Indonesia. I truly urge everyone not to be discouraged by higher prices, because there are a lot of ways you can cut costs, such as: 1. Cooking at home 2. Using cheap sources of protein (tempeh/tofu) 3. Buy staples such as rice in bulk 4. Grow your own food 5. Brainstorm meals before shopping (to avoid spoiling & wasting food) Once you're in the groove you will actually find a vegan/vegetarian diet cheaper than a meat inclusive diet! Take it one step at a time, and if you need support, we'll be here for you! #meatlessmondays #veganism #vegetariansm #English #costs #price #greenliving
